A few years ago, there was only one place to get a halfway decent sandwich in Angeles City. Don't get me wrong, every restaurant and hotel has several sandwiches on the menu. They're just not that good.There's even a couple of deli place that will put together a sandwich for you, but they were all lacking something.  

In fact there hasn't been one place where I would go consistently for a sandwich that was on par with Subway, Quiznos or Jimmy John's. No one was even close. Maybe that's why whenever I'd travel outside of the Angeles to Manila or another country I'd always stop by any Subway franchise I saw. I'm not a huge fan of Subway, but when you don't get a decent sandwich over the course of a year even Subway is appealing. 

This has all changed in the past year with an explosion of Vietnamese restaurants here in Angeles. The Banh Mi sandwich is world famous and one of the most delicious sandwiches you can sink your teeth into. Even the worst Banh Mi is still pretty good. Fortunately we now have 4 (maybe 5) Vietnamese restaurants that opened up within the last couple of years and they all serve their own version of the Banh Mi. 

One man and one restaurant is focusing almost exclusively on perfecting and tweaking versions of the Banh Mi sandwich. That man is Rex Soriano, a Filipino-American citizen who has opened up a small cafe in an area known as Angeles City Proper. He's worked with some big names in the restaurant business over the past 10 years like Wolfgang Puck and Bobby Flay to name two. I found his place by accident and will continue to go back. When you're traveling you're likely staying in a hotel. But think about it: You're basically paying an outrageous amount of money for a room that you likely spend less than 10 hours a day in and most of that is sleeping. 

What about hostels? Are you college aged or a Euro-backpacker? Then come on in! Just be ready to share a room and bathroom with strangers. Also make sure you're out of the room in the morning and don't come back until late afternoon/early evening. 

So you'll stay in a budget hotel you say? How many times has that choice ever worked out?! It's usually sketchy at best, not in the best neighborhood and typically what most people would consider a "flop-house." Even name brand budget hotels just provide the absolute bare minimums.

Wait, there is! It's the often passed by and forgotten guest house. A guest house is right in between a hotel and a hostel but much, much better than a budget hotel in most cases. You'll have your own private room, bathroom and many of the same conveniences you have in a studio apartment setting like a microwave, internet, cable TV, medium sized refrigerator and other amenities you want but often don't find in a hotel or hostel. 

Plus the price is right. Guest houses typically will be your next cheapest option after a hotel, often 50% less (or more) than even a name brand budget hotel. Guest houses are usually owned by individuals and therefore can vary in degrees of niceness from owner to owner, but in my experience each one has a more homey feel.

Airport Food Choices

Airport food typically is either high-end, expensive or low-end and still expensive. There's some great restaurants that are based in airports throughout the world and then there's your fast-food style places. I hate trying to find a decent meal in an airport. There's simply not enough middle of the road, cheap and good places. 

The airport knows they've got you boxed in. You're waiting on a flight and you're at their mercy for food. They can charge whatever they want because they know you're going to buy something. You're certainly not going to leave the friendly confines of the airport once you arrive there. 

First Taste of Thai Food at BKK (Suvarnabhumi)

The departures area has a good selection of food at Suvarnabhumi airport, but the real deal is downstairs in the Arrivals area. If you've got some time before you depart to explore the food scene in Thailand or your departure flight is delayed, then head downstairs to the Arrivals exit area and head straight to the 24 Hour Food Court near Exit Door 8. Don't miss out on this hidden jewel. 

Inside this food mecca you will find around 20 small food stalls each with reasonably priced and delicious food choices.
